I like the approach Ascend has of putting most of the money into the drivers and guts, not so much the finish. Neutral/balanced, no extended bass or bright highs. Also the UB5's have some internal bracing.Īfter reading all the reviews I could find on bookshelf speakers under $500 it sounded like what I was looking for. I believe the Debut uses a 2nd order crossover whereas the UB5's use a 3rd order all around. End of the day, I like the 3-way concentric design over a two-way.

I watched an interview with Andrew Jones where he talks about the Debut 2.0 and it seemed that the changes were mainly the port being moved to the front and driver changes. I listen to mostly hip hop so it's important to me.

The highs on the B6's seemed rather harsh to me.

The UB5's are much more cohesive and refined. The original B6's have better low end bass extension, but the mids and highs can't touch the UB5's. I also convinced my friend to buy the ELAC B6's so I've heard the difference. It's also a 3-way design: woofer, midrange and tweeter. I think that is something you will definitely notice sound wise.
